Description
Schedule Compression |
A technique used to shorten the duration of the schedule while not compromising the scope of the project. There are two popular methods to compress the schedule.
1. Crashing
2. Fast Tracking
CRASHING
What dod we do in crashing?
Crashing |
We add more people to get the work done.
But the caveat here is that we can only compress the schedule if the tasks lie on the Critical Path otherwise adding more resources wouldn’t help.
It also includes allowing people over time so that the same people can work for more on a particular day thus reducing the total duration.
Example –
If 1 person is doing one task (painting the wall) in 20 days. We can add one more person and complete the painting in 10 days.
FAST-TRACKING
another popular method of compressing schedules is Fast Tracking where the tasks are done in parallel rather than doing it in sequential order.
It is not feasible to do fast tracking when tasks can be overlapped/be done in parallel. The task must lie on the critical path. Fast-tracking sometimes results in poor quality work, attracts rework in a later phase, and costs more.
Fast-Tracking |
Example –
Let us say there are two tasks, 1- Painting wall 2. Mowing the lawn. Each task takes 10 days and the total duration is 20 days. But, these tasks can be done in parallel and hence the duration can be reduced to 10 days.
Schedule compression is an important technique in Schedule Management using the Planning and Monitoring & Controlling phases of the project.
It is an independently-used project management tool.
