WBS Dictionary
A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) dictionary is a document that explains in detail each part of a WBS such as its name, description, responsible person, schedule, budget, and other important details
The goal of a WBS dictionary is to give the project team and other interested parties a complete guide. It is used to make sure that everyone who is working on the project has the same idea of the project’s goals and the parts that make up its deliverables. The WBS dictionary also helps make sure that the project is properly scoped, estimated, planned, and carried out, and that the work is done in a coordinated and effective way.
The information in a WBS dictionary can be different depending on what the project needs and what the project team wants. But a WBS dictionary may have some of the following things in it:
- Name and ID of a WBS element
- WBS element description
- The deliverable for the WBS element
- The person or the team responsible to complete the work
- Description of the work package
- Information about the schedule, including start and end dates and the length of time
- Information about the budget, such as cost estimates and budget allocation
- Performance standards or criteria for success
- Risk management information
- Dependencies or limits that are part of the WBS element
Overall, a WBS dictionary is one of the most important tools for managing projects well. It gives the project team and other stakeholders a detailed reference that helps make sure the work is properly scoped, estimated, and planned, and that it is done in a coordinated and efficient way.
