Description
Active listening is a communication technique that requires the listener to fully engage with the speaker, and to understand, interpret, and respond to what is being said. It is an important skill in any context, but especially in project management, where effective communication is essential to successful outcomes.
The PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) defines active listening as “a process whereby the listener attends closely to the speaker’s verbal and nonverbal cues and rephrases or clarifies what they have heard to ensure mutual understanding.” This definition highlights two key aspects of active listening: paying attention to both what is being said and how it is being said and taking action to ensure that understanding has been achieved.
Active listening takes effort and concentration, but it is a critical skill for project managers. By actively listening, we can ensure that we are accurately receiving and interpreting information from others. This helps to avoid misunderstandings and miscommunications, which can lead to problems down the line. Additionally, active listening shows respect for others and creates a space for open dialogue. When we actively listen to others, we send the message that we value their input and are interested in hearing what they have to say.
