Responsibility Assignment Matrix (RAM) / RACI
A Responsibility Assignment Matrix (RAM), also called a RACI matrix, is a tool for managing projects that helps team members understand their roles and responsibilities. The matrix is a grid that connects project tasks and deliverables to team members. For each task or deliverable, each team member is given a role.
Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed (RACI) are the four main roles that each team member has in the matrix:
Responsible (R)
The person on the team whose job it is to finish the task or deliverable. This person is the one who does the work and is responsible for it.
Accountable (A)
The person on the team who is responsible for the task or deliverable in the end. This person is the “owner,” and it’s their job to make sure the work is done to the right level.
Consulted (C)
The person on the team who gives ideas and advice for the task or deliverable. This person is not in charge of the work, but their knowledge or experience is sought out.
Informed (I)
A team member who knows how the task or deliverable is coming along. This person is not in charge of the work, but they need to know how things are going with it.
The RAM helps to clarify the roles and responsibilities of each team member, cut down on confusion and wasted work, and make sure that everyone on the team knows what their jobs are. It is especially helpful for complicated projects with a lot of stakeholders and team members, where it may not be clear who is in charge of which tasks or deliverables.
