Consider a library that tracks every book, where it is, who is borrowing it, and what edition it is. A Configuration Management System (CMS) is similar to a well-organized project library. It monitors all aspects of a project, including software, papers, and even hardware. It understands what has changed, who made the changes, and when they occurred. The CMS, like the librarian, guarantees that all books are in the appropriate location and are up to date for a project, allowing everyone to work on the most recent and accurate version of everything.
