What is a Functional Organization?
In project management, a functional organization is analogous to having multiple teams or departments where everyone specializes in specialized duties, similar to how a restaurant has separate parts for cooking, serving, and cleaning. Each group specializes on a certain job or talent, such as marketing, engineering, or finance. People in this organization often report to department heads or managers, and the project manager may or may not have direct responsibility over them. It’s similar to having professionals from several fields collaborate, each accountable for their own aspect of the project, but it may require coordination between departments to ensure everything runs well.
